The reception of the Realdania building in central Copenhagen was divided by a large free-standing wall, 5.5 × 2.8 metres, concealing doors and services behind it. In 2009, during Flemming Borreskov’s tenure as CEO, I was commissioned to create a site-specific artwork covering this wall, while also improving the acoustics of the resonant granite space.
I clad this wall in patinated copper and brass, worked in part from perforated and etched-through sheets of metal. The wall was first lined with sound-proofing material, and the perforations let the artwork keep those sound-absorbing qualities. The work has since been placed in art storage, as the reception was later rebuilt.
Realdania is a philanthropic association in Denmark that initiates and supports projects improving the built environment, and with it the quality of life, for the common good.
