A year ago I was commissioned to create an artwork to highlight a national treasure!
This treasure is the Kantilena, the oldest known literary text in the Maltese language (likely from the 1470’s). It was inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register on April 18 2025. There is more information about this amazing text here. The artwork, which serves as a pedestal for the volume, was commissioned by Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti for the Notarial Registers Archive in Valletta.
The commissioned artwork is made from etched and patinated copper and it was presented on April 10 in Valletta, Malta. A talk I gave in connection with this can be seen here. Below, the first photo by Daniel Cilia shows the Kantilena. The last three photos were taken at the presentation by Massimo Denaro from the Notarial Archives Foundation., where I am in the company of Chanelle Mifsud Briffa, Joan Abela and Francesca Balzan, a part of the incredible, passionate team at the archive.
